Sink hole impacts traffic on Mottman Road for two days

A sink hole that developed on Mottman Road west of South Puget Sound Community College impacted traffic Wednesday and Thursday.

City of Olympia crews first discovered the sink hole on the shoulder of the 2400 block of Mottman Road Wednesday morning, spokesperson Carrie McCausland said.

Crews covered the hole with temporary plates overnight, she said. After investigating, crews learned the hole extended deep under the travel lane.

“It ended up extending 4 feet into the travel lane from the shoulder and (crews) excavated to 4 feet deep to get to solid material and backfill with crushed rock,” McCausland said.

Westbound traffic flowed intermittently with the help of flaggers as crews worked to address the hole, McCausland said. Though not directly affected, the eastbound lane experienced some slowdown as well.

McCausland said motorists still had access to nearby businesses and State Route 101 via Mottman Road.

Crews fully reopened the road by Thursday evening, McCausland said. Once weather conditions dry out, she said, crews will return to provide a permanent pavement patch. That will likely be in the spring or summer, she added.
