A driver died on Thursday after colliding with a barrier on Interstate 5 north of Grand Mound.

The driver was traveling north on the freeway just before noon when the vehicle hit a barrier, said Trooper John Dattilo. The collision occurred near milepost 90, just north of the Scatter Creek Rest Area.

The cause of the collision remained under investigation Thursday afternoon. When contacted, Dattilo said he did not yet have a description nor an identity for the driver who died.

“We’ve got our collision technical specialists out there,” Dattilo said. “The medical examiner’s report will confirm cause of death.”

Troopers closed the left two lanes where the crash occurred for the investigation. Dattilo could not say when the road would reopen, but he said such closures typically last at least 2-3 hours.

No other people were involved in the collision, he said.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
