First phase of Tumwater’s Capitol Boulevard reconfiguration project starts this week
A plan to clean up the intersection of Capitol Boulevard and Trosper Road in Tumwater — in the works for years — is finally getting underway.
With entrances and exits to I-5 squeezed into one of the main roads through the city, car crashes and heavy congestion are common sights in the area.
The city’s goal is to install three roundabouts and construct a new street to help lessen traffic. And there will be improvements made to pedestrian and bicyclist lanes and sidewalks.
The first step begins Monday, Jan. 30 and will last through Feb. 10, with utility crews doing underground installation work.
There will be extended lane closures at the intersection throughout that period. Crews will be saw cutting, removing pavement, excavating and more around the clock.
During the day, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction, according to a news release from Washington State Department of Transportation. At night, traffic will be reduced further to a one-lane alternating, flagger-controlled work zone. Drivers are being asked to use alternate routes if possible.
The $12.5 million project is expected to continue into mid 2024.
