Man dies in wrong-way two-vehicle collision on State Route 510 Tuesday evening

One person died in a two-vehicle crash south of the Nisqually Indian Community and north of Yelm on Tuesday.

The crashed occurred at about 9 p.m. at milepost 11 of State Route 510, according to a press memo from Washington State Patrol.

The driver of a Mazda sedan reportedly crossed the center line and struck an eastbound Toyota sedan. Both vehicles came to rest in ditches on opposite sides of the road, the memo says.

The Mazda driver, who was a 36-year-old Yelm man, did not wear a seatbelt and died at the scene, the memo says. His car was totaled.

The driver of the Toyota sedan, a 30-year-old Yelm man, wore his seatbelt and was not injured, according to the memo.

State Patrol memo says it is unclear if drugs or alcohol were involved.

Troopers and state Department of Transportation officials closed the highway in both directions for two hours and 45 minutes after the crash.

In a series of tweets, Trooper Robert Reyer called the incident “tragic.”

“Our hearts go out to the loved ones of those involved,” Reyer said.
