The State Avenue and East Bay Drive Safety Improvement Project is resuming road work in downtown Olympia this week in an effort to address what has been identified as the city’s most dangerous intersection for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Construction crews will be back at the intersection starting Wednesday, April 5, to prepare the area for paving. People should expect lane closures, flaggers in either direction and detours while crews are working. Driveway access on the street and transit stops could be affected, the city says.

The end goal is to remove a left turn lane from State Avenue onto Plum Street to make room for bicycle and pedestrian improvements. The city acknowledges that one less lane may lead to more congestion in the area. Its news release on the project says that during peak travel time from 4 to 6 p.m., there might be five or more cars in each lane behind a red light.

Construction is expected during the day from Wednesday through Friday, April 5 to April 7. There will be nighttime construction and lane closures on April 10 and April 11.

The intersection will be fully closed on April 12 and April 13 to allow crews to pave. The work should be complete by 6 p.m. April 13.

Travelers are being asked to plan ahead for the construction and choose alternate routes, or use caution while driving through the area. To learn more about the project, visit the city’s website.
