Overnight closure coming to U.S. Highway 12 this week. Here’s what to expect

The portion of US-12 that runs through downtown Grand Mound in south Thurston County will be closed May 2 and May 3 for construction. Drivers in the area can expect detours that will prevent people from being in a work zone.

A significant portion of U.S. Highway 12 in Grand Mound will be closed overnight on Wednesday, May 24.

The closure will be in place between Pecan Street Southwest and Old Highway 99 or Elderberry Street, according to a Thurston County news release. Drivers in the area can expect detours to guide them around the affected area.

Workers will be marking the pavement at the new roundabout intersection at Sargent Road, according to the release. The county advises drivers abide by posted speed limits and use caution in the work zone.

Once finished, the county says the roundabout will bring a north-south crossing to U.S. 12 and improve traffic flow.

The roundabout also should allow drivers to take an alternative route during road maintenance, the release says. Emergency response vehicles are expected to benefit from the new route too.

U.S. 12 is an important east-west highway that’s used by residents and businesses of Grand Mound, Rochester and the surrounding area. County planners expect the area to see increased development, according to the project website.

This $6 million project is funded by Thurston County and developer fees as well as the Chehalis Tribe and other developers.

More information about the roundabout can be found on the county’s project website.
