Downtown Olympia intersection closes Thursday, west side utility work starts next week
Drivers passing through downtown Olympia should avoid Washington Street at Fifth Avenue on Thursday.
The intersection will be closed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday so work crews can apply paint to the crosswalks, according to a city traffic alert. Street and sidewalk detours will guide drivers and pedestrians around the intersection.
Access to Timberland Bank, Captain Little toy store, Rumors Wine Bar and other businesses on the intersection may be affected. The city advises the public to follow alternate routes and obey all traffic control.
Another traffic alert warned of utility work launching on the west side next week. Starting Tuesday, the city says Puget Sound Energy and their subcontractor InfraSource will work on Cardigan Street and Cardigan Loop, just northeast of Capital High School.
Traffic in the area will be impacted during the day but no street closures are planned, according to the alert. The project won’t affect access to nearby homes.
Crews will conduct utility work from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday until late July or early August, according to the alert.
Those with questions about the utility project can contact Project Manager Jocelyn Muri at 206-305-8570 or Eric Miller, construction manager, at 425-417-8522.
