Daytime roadwork will slow traffic on both directions of Interstate 5 in Olympia this weekend.

Maintenance crews plan to close the left lane in both directions near the U.S. 101 interchange on Saturday and Sunday, according to a news release from the Washington State Department of Transportation.

The lane closures could affect weekend plans for travelers hoping to take advantage of the warming weather. WSDOT says it needs crews to repair a section of the center barrier that was damaged by a recent crash.

Crews will close the left lane of the southbound side from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. and the left lane of the northbound side from 5 a.m. to noon, according to the news release from WSDOT.

WSDOT said it selected these times to do the work because drivers tend to behave safer during those hours. Crews and work zone signs are more easily visible during the day as well.

Travelers can expect congestion in both directions as they approach the work zone, according to the release. WSDOT advises drivers to slow down, pay attention and be kind to crews.

Updates on road closures and traffic can be found on the WSDOT app for mobile devices or the WSDOT Travel Center Map website.
