Tumwater’s busiest intersection is getting a major upgrade that will require closures and detours that will last from Friday, July 21, until July 31.

The ramps on and off Interstate 5 at Trosper Road and Capitol Boulevard will be closed to be reconfigured, and for the completion of a roundabout on the new extension of Sixth Avenue.

The improvements to what is being called the Capitol Boulevard Corridor are meant to increase pedestrian safety, address congestion and fix mobility issues along Trosper Road from the I-5 overpass to the interstate ramps and Capitol Boulevard, according to a news release from the City of Tumwater.

Since the beginning of the year, a new road has been constructed, Sixth Avenue Southwest, which runs parallel to the freeway from Lee Street to Trosper Road.

The northbound on and off ramps to I-5 at Exit 102 will be closed starting at 9 p.m. Friday, July 21, and they will reopen at 5 a.m. Monday, July 31. Once it’s open, the new ramps will carry traffic exiting the interstate to and from Capitol Boulevard via the new Sixth Avenue extension and Lee Street.

A signed detour will be in place during the ramp closures telling people to use Exit 101 instead to access I-5. The area will still be accessible to pedestrians, according to the news release.

Construction on the corridor project is anticipated to continue through next summer, but the timeline is subject to change due to weather and other factors.
