Work crews plan to close I-5 lanes in south Thurston County starting Thursday
Drivers on Interstate 5 in south Thurston County can expect lane closures during evenings and nights starting Thursday.
Work crews will be closing lanes so they can repair the driving surface of the highway, according to a news release from the Washington State Department of Transportation.
Portions of northbound I-5 between Grand Mound and Scatter Creek Rest Area will be reduced to one lane, the news release says. This will happen from 8 p.m. Thursday to 4 a.m. Friday. Similar closures will occur daily from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following morning from Oct. 16-19.
The closure will cause congestion and backups in the evening hours. WSDOT advises drivers to give themselves extra time to travel through the area.
“Travelers are encouraged to go early or late to avoid congestion,” the release says. “Please consider combining trips or rescheduling non-essential travel.”
This project was initially scheduled for Oct. 10-19 but WSDOT canceled that plan on Monday. The release says this work may be rescheduled again depending on the weather.
Drivers can see real-time traffic and road alerts on the WSDOT app and the WSDOT website.
