A crash involving a semi-truck and two cars has caused about a three-mile backup near the Fife curve on southbound I-5.

A semi-truck experienced mechanical failures and lost control at milepost 138.5 near 70th Avenue East close to 1:23 p.m. The semi-truck is in the middle of the highway and blocking traffic, according to Washington State Patrol Trooper John Dattilo.

Dattilo said two cars are involved. It is unclear if the semi-truck hit them when it lost control or if the cars ran into the semi-truck. There were only minor injuries. There is no evidence of intoxication.

It will be a while before the semi-truck is cleared out of the roadway. Three of the left southbound lanes are blocked. Drivers should expect several hours of delay.

3:20 p.m. update: The semi has been towed away on southbound I-5 approaching the Fife curve. Troopers are working to clear the remaining vehicles. Two of the lanes have reopened.

3:35 p.m. update: All lanes are now open. The backup from this collision is considerable. It will take time for traffic to clear.
