Morning traffic at a standstill on Mullen Road due to construction. Here are alternatives

If you take Mullen Road to get to work or take your kids to school, you may want to consider alternative routes.

A major construction project at Mullen and Kagy Road for a future housing development is in full swing. The construction, which includes road work, has been causing significant traffic delays along the miles-long main route from College Street to St. Claire Cutoff Road.

The Manor House Subdivision will create hundreds of new single-family homes in the area near Mullen Road, Kagy Street and 58th Avenue. The new subdivision covers 82 acres and will create over 600 new homes.

The project includes public road construction, sewer extension to connect with the city of Lacey, and logging a former 53-acre Christmas tree farm.

On Thursday morning, traffic delays around 8 a.m. exceeded 20 minutes as local residents tried to get to work and their children to school. Dump trucks, construction workers and heavy equipment line the road in several places. A long stretch of Mullen is now also a single-lane road.

What are alternative routes for Mullen?

If you are driving through the area and want to avoid sitting in traffic, the two best alternatives to get around construction are Yelm Highway and Meridian Road.

Construction stops with flaggers begin once you reach the intersection of Marvin Road and Mullen.

Two alternative routes you can take:

  • Yelm Highway to Ruddell Road to Mullen Road.

  • Meridian Road to Pacific Avenue, to Lacey Boulevard to Ruddell Road to Mullen Road.
