Expect backups on I-5 near Nisqually Saturday, Sunday mornings. Here’s why

A single lane closure on southbound Interstate 5 is expected to cause congestion and delays during the mornings of Saturday, April 26, and Sunday, April 27, 2025, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation. The agency’s real-time travel maps shows the traffic impacts will occur at the border of Thurston and Pierce counties.

Travelers crossing into Thurston County on Interstate 5 from the north should expect traffic delays Saturday and Sunday mornings, April 26-27.

Work crews will close one lane of southbound I-5 approaching the Nisqually River Bridge from 6-11 a.m. on both days, according to a Thursday travel advisory from the Washington state Department of Transportation.

The lane closure will allow crews to inspect the bridge with a “specialized under-bridge inspection truck,” according to the advisory. WSDOT says this work is being done during daylight hours for worker safety.

As a result, only two lanes will be open as travelers approach the bridge from Pierce County, around milepost 115.

The advisory asks drivers to slow down and pay attention to traffic and workers. Congestion and delays are to be expected, especially in the late morning hours.

The public can see real-time travel updates on road work, accidents and delays on the WSDOT app and their online travel map.
