Two semi-trucks crashed on northbound Interstate 5 in Tumwater Tuesday night, injuring one driver and causing a lengthy traffic backup.

The collision occurred at 9:54 p.m. at I-5 milepost 104, near U.S. 101, according to a Washington State Patrol press memo.

A 60-year-old Puyallup man driving a semi-truck struck a pothole with standing water and lost control. The semi-truck jackknifed and rolled onto its side, fully blocking all northbound lanes. A second semi-truck, driven by a 38-year-old man from Buena Park, California, then struck the first semi-truck.

First responders transported the Puyallup man to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, according to the press memo.

The Buena Park man was not injured in the collision, nor was his passenger, a 33-year-old man from Carmichael, California.

The first semi-truck was totaled in the collision, the memo says.

The Tumwater Fire Department responded to the collision along with State Patrol and shared an image of the scene on Facebook. The image shows a firefighter looking into one of the semi-trucks while weathering the rain.

Troopers investigated the collision and Washington State Department of Transportation crews assisted with diverting traffic, Trooper Kameron Watts shared on X.

State Patrol listed the cause of the collision as “speed too fast for conditions” in an updated memo.

Watts said the roadway was blocked until a little after 3 a.m. Wednesday.
