California is among the worst states for driving, report says. Here’s how others rank
California traffic may be notorious but as it turns out, the state is not the worst in the country for driving, according to a new report.
WalletHub released a report on the best and worst states to drive in and assessed all 50 states based on factors including rush-hour traffic congestion, average gas prices and road quality.
Washington and California came in at Nos. 47 and 48 respectively, and Hawaii is the worst state for drivers. Hawaii has some of the fewest car washes per capita, most days with precipitation, highest car maintenance costs and highest gas prices.
Iowa, Tennessee, North Carolina, Texas and Nebraska rank as the top five states for drivers, according to the report.
California and Washington also have some of the highest gas prices in the country. California ranked as one of the states with the most car thefts and rush-hour traffic congestion.
Sitting in traffic, in particular, is bad for your health, wallet and time.
In Los Angeles, people spent 119 hours a year last year stuck in traffic, according to CNBC.
In addition to wasted time, traffic results in wasted fuel, which exceeds $100 billion per year, according to The New York Times. It also leads to environmental and health repercussions.
Sacramento was also home to some of the worst drivers in the country last year, according to a report by QuoteWizard.
The report found that Portland, Oregon; Boise, Idaho; Virginia Beach, Virginia; Columbus, Ohio; and Sacramento were the cities with the worst drivers when looking at speeding tickets, accidents, DUIs and citations.
