Woman killed after being thrown from car flipped by tornado, Mississippi cops say
A 62-year-old woman died in a car crash after a tornado swept through Mississippi, officials said.
The woman was identified as Carolyn Gildersleeve, Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd Jr. told McClatchy News.
She was driving on Highway 63 in Moss Point around 9 p.m. Wednesday when her car flipped several times, Jackson County Emergency Management Agency Director Earl Etheridge told WLOX.
Gildersleeve was thrown from her car and transported to a local hospital, where she died from her injuries, according to the Moss Point Police Department.
The National Weather Service confirmed that an F1 tornado swept through Charles Street and moved northeast to Henry Street — crossing the area where the woman was driving and causing damage to power lines, trees and structures, police said.
An F1 tornado has wind speeds of 73 to 112 miles per hour and is classified as a “moderate tornado” by the National Weather Service.
Moss Point is 185 miles southeast of Jackson, Mississippi, and 40 miles southwest of Mobile, Alabama.
