A 13-year-old girl stabbed another student at an Arizona middle school during their lunch period, police said.

The 13-year-old boy was sent to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Scottsdale Police Department said in a tweet on Oct. 29.

He suffered one stab wound, Scottsdale Unified School District said in a letter to parents that same day.

The girl stabbed the boy outside on their lunch break, the letter states, sending the boy to the hospital overnight.

“We want to emphasize that the incident involved these two students only and that the general student body was not in danger,” the letter states.

Authorities said the girl was taken into custody at a youth detention center, and they had no further updates on Nov. 2.

The school district reminded parents in the letter bringing a weapon onto campus is a violation of Arizona law, a city ordinance and the school’s code of conduct.

The letter also urged students to access different resources at the school to “resolve differences,” including reaching out to teachers, administrators, guidance counselors, social workers and school resource officers.

“We know that interpersonal situations can seem overwhelming at times, especially to teenagers in unfamiliar emotional territory,” the letter states.

Mohave Middle School provided “additional” support for students on Nov. 1 “who may be struggling with what they may have witnessed, saw on social media, or heard through the grapevine.”

Scottsdale is in the Phoenix metro area.
