A 9-year-old was hospitalized after falling from a pickup truck during an Eastern North Carolina parade, officials said.

The N.C. State Highway Patrol said the child was in the back of the moving truck before falling out of it on Sunday, Dec. 5. A trailer connected to the pickup then ran over the boy, according to Sgt. Jason Williams.

State troopers said it happened just before 3:30 p.m. at the Christmas parade in Bath, the first town founded in North Carolina in 1705. Today, it lies in Beaufort County and is roughly 120 miles southeast of Raleigh.

The 9-year-old was taken in a helicopter to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. The child had non-life-threatening injuries, according to highway patrol.

As of the morning of Monday, Dec. 6, Williams said the incident was under investigation.
