‘Multiple gunshots’ fired at bus carrying elementary school students, Georgia cops say

UPDATE: Police have identified a woman they said fired several shots at a school bus full of students in Gwinnett County on Monday, May 9. Celeste Michele Saunders, 57, was booked on four counts of first-degree child cruelty, five counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of certain felonies and unauthorized discharge of a firearm near a public street, according to police. A woman accused of firing “multiple gunshots” at a school bus full of students as it drove through an Atlanta-area neighborhood has been arrested, according to Gwinnett County police.

The bus was on its way to Riverside Elementary School in Suwanee, Georgia when it was shot at near Settles Bridge Park on Monday, May 9, WSB-TV and the Gwinnett Daily Post reported. Officers were alerted to the incident just after 7:15 a.m., police said.

The bus driver sustained minor injuries due to shattered glass, and none of the children were hurt, according to authorities. It’s not clear how many students were on board.

The suspect, who police haven’t named publicly, was arrested at the scene without incident.

Police haven’t identified a motive and said the shooting remains under investigation.

McClatchy News reached out to Gwinnett County Public Schools on May 9 and was awaiting a response.

Suwanee is about 30 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta.
