A Virginia woman came up with a funny and very understated response when her husband called to say he’d just won $5 million in the lottery.

“She said to get home safely,” Dennis Rector told lottery officials.

Rector, who lives in King George County, admits it wasn’t easy, Virginia Lottery officials said in a news release.

“My hands were shaking!” he said.

His $30 winning ticket in the $5,000,000 Ultimate game was purchased at a Sheetz convenience store in King George, the lottery said.

Odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 2,448,000, according to the game.

“He had the choice of taking the full $5 million prize in annual payments over 30 years or a one-time cash option of $3,201,024 before taxes. He selected the cash option,” the lottery reported.

“Rector said he intends to pay bills and save his winnings for retirement.”

The Sheetz store also got $10,000 from the lottery as a reward “for selling the winning ticket,” officials said.

Rector was the first to win one of the game’s three $5 million prizes, the lottery says. Secondary prizes in the game range from $30 to $20,000.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
