A 2-year-old boy was killed in southern Maine after being struck by a moving pickup truck and camper trailer, according to a news release from the Maine State Police.

The child’s father was moving the vehicles in the driveway of a Lambs Mills Road residence in Naples on Sept. 17 and could not see him when the accident occurred, according to the release. Around 1 p.m. someone called 911.

The boy’s parents immediately took him to the Naples Fire Department, where Cumberland County Deputies arrived and life saving measures were attempted, according to the release.

First responders were not able to revive the child and he was pronounced dead, according to officials.

The identity of the child has not been released.

There has been a “staggering increase” in the number of fatal car accidents in Maine so far in 2022, according to the Boston Globe. Traffic fatalities in the U.S. reached a 16-year high in 2021, according to the Department of Transportation.
