11-year-old moving his crashed dirt bike is fatally hit by another rider, Florida cops say
An 11-year-old dirt bike rider died after he was hit by another rider on a Florida motocross track, news outlets report.
On July 30, the child was riding an 85cc dirt bike at the Dade City Motocross, police told outlets. Multiple riders were on the track practicing, Spectrum News 13 reported.
The 11-year-old went over a jump but crashed when he landed, Pasco News reported.
It is unclear how badly the child was injured in the fall, but he was able to get up and started to pick his bike off the ground, according to the outlet.
As he started to walk off, another rider came over the top of the same jump and hit the 11-year-old on the upper part of his body, Spectrum News 13 reported.
Medics at the motocross immediately began helping the child, but due to injuries to the boy’s shoulder, they decided to call Pasco County Fire Rescue, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
The child was flown by helicopter to a Tampa-area hospital, the outlet reported.
McClatchy News reached out to Dade City Motocross about the accident but did not immediately receive a response.
Dade City Police told Pasco News they were notified by the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office later that afternoon that the boy had died from the injuries.
“My heart is breaking! This is every Moto parents’ (worst) fear!” a parent who said their child also races at the facility said on Facebook.
McClatchy News reached out to police for details about the accident and was awaiting a response.
A police spokesperson told the Tampa Bay Times the name of the boy will not be released because of his age, and the investigation into the crash was ongoing.
Dade City is about 40 miles north of Tampa.
