‘Big O’ fish’ challenges angler for an hour as he reels it in from Nevada river. ‘Wowza’
An angler reeled in a massive, record-breaking carp on a Nevada river, a catch he says took him more than an hour to bring in.
Pedro Gonzales caught the 22-pound, 5 ounce fish on Aug. 13 on the Humboldt River in Eureka County, the Nevada Department of Wildlife said in a Aug. 16 Facebook post.
The fish measured over 36 inches in length and had a 23-inch girth, the department said.
Facebook users shared their delight in Gonzales’ catch, with some commenting “Wowza” and “WOW! Big O’ fish.”
“Pedro is eating good tonight!” another user wrote.
Common carp can reach 47 inches in length and weigh over 88 pounds, according to the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife.
Wildlife officials called Gonzales’ catch a “new water record,” meaning it was the heaviest carp caught on that particular body of water.
The previous record for the river was a 9-pound, 1-ounce carp caught in April 2006, a spokesperson for the Nevada Department of Wildlife said in an email to McClatchy News.
At over 300 miles long, the Humboldt River is the longest river in the country “that begins and ends within the boundaries of one state,” according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife.
The record carp in the whole state of Nevada was reeled in on Virginia Lake in March 2020, according to the spokesperson. The fish weighed 35 pounds, 3 ounces.
Eureka County is about 280 miles northeast of Reno.
