Desperate puppy ‘was eating sticks and dirt to survive’ in Chicago. She’ll need a home
A sweetheart of a young dog with big, curious eyes is living the comfortable life in Illinois after enduring being a starving stray on the streets.
When Cece, a 1-year-old mixed breed, was first seen by Paws Chicago, she was at Chicago Animal Care and Control in an extremely unhealthy situation, the shelter said in a Nov. 24 Instagram post.
“Cece was so hungry as a stray, she was eating sticks and dirt to survive,” the shelter said. “We met her at Chicago Animal Care and Control after they’d shaved her matted fur and took x-rays that revealed the mess of sticks and twigs in her stomach. She was also cachexic, which means she’d been hungry for so long that her muscles were wasting away.”
Along with photos of the emaciated pup, X-rays show the non-edible objects lodged in her gut. While Cece’s life prior to rescue is certainly soul-shattering, she is now on the mend in a foster home.
“At our Medical Center, Cece quickly fell in love with soft bedding, seeking out the plushiest place to curl up in. We think she’s only about a year old, and we wonder if this is her first time having such a luxury,” the shelter said.
“As you read this, she’s likely snoozing in her foster’s lap with a full belly and not one single worry.”
McClatchy News reached out to Paws Chicago to inquire about when Cece will be available for adoption and did not immediately receive a response.
