Germany Fan Who Captured Hearts With World Cup Trip Invited to White House
A German soccer fan whose cross-country World Cup road trip has captivated millions online is now in talks to visit the White House, marking the latest surreal moment in a journey that has become a viral side story of the 2026 tournament.
"Freddy," who posts under the handle @FreddyLA7, has been documenting his travels across the United States with a mix of curiosity and enthusiasm-turning everyday stops into widely shared moments and drawing attention from brands, celebrities and government officials alike.
Now, a Trump administration official says that enthusiasm could soon take him to Washington.
White House Visit ‘In the Works'
Nick Adams, a senior official tasked with promoting U.S. tourism, revealed that he has been in direct contact with Freddy and is working to arrange a visit before the tournament ends.
"I saw all his posts, and so I took it upon myself to reach out," Adams told Front Office Sports. "I said, ‘Hey, Freddy, I'm the tourism guy in America. I love what you're saying and what you're doing. Do you want to come to Washington? I'd be happy to take you for a tour of the State Department and the White House.'"
Adams said the pair have been communicating via direct messages and that plans could include tours of both the White House and State Department, though it remains unclear whether a meeting with President Donald Trump would take place.
Public posts from Adams also suggested the invitation is progressing, writing that he "can't wait to welcome Freddy to our nation's capital."
Newsweek reached out to Nick Adams, the White House and Freddy via email for comment.
From Waffle House to NASA
The potential visit to Washington is the latest escalation in what has become a fast-moving and increasingly high-profile tour of America.
Freddy first went viral after sharing unfiltered reactions to everyday aspects of U.S. life-from late-night Waffle House visits to stops at Walmart and Buc-ee's-during a six-week road trip tied to the World Cup.
Since then, his itinerary has expanded far beyond roadside attractions.
During a recent stop in Houston, Freddy visited NASA's Johnson Space Center, where he toured facilities and even took part in a call with astronauts aboard the International Space Station-an experience he described as surreal just days after eating at a casual restaurant chain in Tennessee.
In a post on X, NASA astronaut Jessica Meir said: “We were thrilled to have you aboard the International Space Station @FreddyLA7! Life up here literally orbits around strong international spirit and solid teamwork, just like the World Cup. @NASAJohnson and Houston were honored to host you. Enjoy your trip north, and safe travels!”
Companies like Wendy's have publicly engaged with his posts, while prominent personalities-including former NFL star J.J. Watt-have helped facilitate parts of his trip, such as accommodations during his Houston stop. Government officials have also joined in, with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy among those boosting his journey online.
He has also been offered VIP experiences across the country, including meeting country star Ella Langley, sports facility tours and complimentary stays, as his following has surged into the hundreds of thousands within days of arriving in the U.S.
Viral Fame Meets World Cup Moment
Freddy's rise reflects a broader cultural moment around the expanded World Cup being hosted in North America, where fan experiences off the pitch are helping shape the global narrative of the tournament.
His posts-often expressing amazement at elements of American life that locals take for granted-have drawn millions of views, with audiences embracing the contrast between outsider perspective and familiar routines.
That appeal has also made him an informal ambassador of sorts, something Adams explicitly leaned into when extending the White House invitation.
