Manziel’s ex-girlfriend says he repeatedly struck her during fight

Acting as if he were “on some kind of drugs,” Johnny Manziel’s ex-girlfriend told police he repeatedly struck her after a fight that began at a Dallas hotel and continued as he drove her home to Fort Worth, Texas, according to a police report released Thursday.

Colleen Crowley, Manziel’s ex-girlfriend, told officers she had been with Manziel and others at the ZaZa hotel in Dallas but that the pair were left alone after other friends left.

She said Manziel, a quarterback with the Cleveland Browns, began acting aggressive toward her, as if “he was on some kind of drugs,” the report states. She insisted to police, however, that he was not intoxicated.

She said Manziel struck her several times, including in the left ear, and then insisted on driving her home to Fort Worth because he did not want her to drive intoxicated.

On the ride home, she told officers, he struck her several times but was “somewhat vague on the details of the assault,” according to report, which included numerous redactions in the narrative.

Crowley said upon arriving at her apartment Homes, she ran in and out of her front door in attempt to get away from Manziel. She became irritated when officers asked her if Manziel had assaulted her at her apartment, the report states.

She told officers she ran to a nearby neighbor’s door to seek help, at which time Manziel fled on foot.

As the interview continued, the report states, Crowley became increasingly uncooperative, refusing to answer additional questions, nor allowing photographs to be taken of her or injuries.

She did express concern about Manziel, prompting police to dispatch a helicopter to search for him in the area.

After several attempts to locate Manziel, including contacting his parents, who had recently moved to Fort Worth, officers were able to talk to his father who said he had seen his son and that he was “doing fine,” the report states.

The father requested officers not contact him again unless there was an existing warrant, the report states.

Fort Worth police said Thursday that they do not expect to seek charges against Manziel in connection with the incident.

Dallas police, who had been alerted to the incident by Fort Worth police about the possible assault in their jurisdiction, said in an email Thursday that they remain in the preliminary stages of their investigation and had no further information to release.

Reached by telephone, Paul Manziel declined to comment on his conversation with Fort Worth police or the incident involving his son.

"I don't even know what you're talking about," Paul Manziel said. "I haven't read the report. Until I read it, I couldn't comment on anything because I don't know what it says."

On his way out in Cleveland

Even though no charges have been brought against Manziel, his off-the-field troubles appear to have caught up with him, at least in Cleveland where the Browns appear ready to cut their tumultuous ties with the former Heisman Trophy winner from Texas A&M.

On Tuesday, the Browns released a statement, indicating they plan to release Manziel in March when the NFL begins its next calendar year.

“We’ve been clear about expectations for our players on and off the field,” Browns vice president of football operations Sashi Brown said in a statement. “Johnny’s continual involvement in incidents that run counter to those expectations undermines the hard work of his teammates and the reputation of our organization. His status with our team will be addressed when permitted by league rules.”

Manziel went 2-6 as a starter over two years with the Browns, but he fell out of favor with the team and fans after a series of missteps, mostly off the field. He was the 22nd pick in the 2014 NFL draft.

There have been a flurry of Manziel sightings in the DFW area in the past couple of weeks, the most recent coming at the American Airlines Center on Wednesday when he attended a Dallas Mavericks’ game.

He’s been spotted in Dallas bars and on Jan. 16 Manziel was in a Fort Worth liquor store buying a $120 bottle of tequilia. While he was not breaking any laws, the purchase came a year after Manziel had entered a rehab center that specializes in the treatment of drug and alcohol abuse.

In a public statement released in April, Manziel apologized to the Browns and their fans, saying that what he had “learned in the last couple of months has been tremendous.”

In October, police in Avon, Ohio were called after Manziel and Crowley got into a heated argument. The couple admitted that they had been drinking and Manziel was allowed to leave with Crowley.

If he gets released from the Browns, his future is in the NFL is cloudy at best, though some have speculated hen could end up as a backup to Tony Romo with the Cowboys.
