See who entered the race to fill late state Sen. Bill Ramos’ seat

Two candidates — a Democrat and Republican — are vying to fill the seat left vacant by the late state Sen. Bill Ramos, a Democrat who’d represented the 5th Legislative District.

Democratic state Rep. Victoria Hunt of Issaquah formally entered the race last Monday, May 5. The next day, former state Rep. Chad Magendanz, a Republican, followed suit.

Ramos died unexpectedly last month during a trail run. He was 69.

Looking ahead, a Democrat will be appointed to the role and will serve through the election, per the Washington State Standard; Hunt is seeking that appointment. Whoever wins in the Nov. 4 general election will carry out the three-year remainder of Ramos’ term.

The 5th Legislature District covers Issaquah, Covington, Black Diamond and part of Snoqualmie.

The deadline for candidate filing was Friday, May 9.

Magendanz formerly served two terms representing LD 5 in the state House. He also squared off against Ramos last November, earning 48% of the vote to Ramos’ 52%.

Hunt is a newcomer to Olympia, having been sworn in to the state House in January. An environmental scientist, she earned a doctorate in ecology and has served as chief data officer for Crosswalk Labs, which tracks greenhouse gas emissions over time, according to her biography on the House Democratic Caucus’ website. She is vice chair of the House Environment and Energy Committee.

Hunt also has served on the Issaquah City Council, where she focused on affordable housing, public safety and the environment.

In addition to his previous legislative career, Magendanz once served as president of the Issaquah School Board. A news release announcing his candidacy says he aims to restore balance, fiscal discipline and accountability to the state Capitol.

Magendanz is also a former nuclear submarine officer, according to the news release. During his time in Olympia, he focused on technology advancement, education reform and budget transparency.
