WA governor asks for $21.3 million from FEMA after December flooding
Gov. Bob Ferguson announced Wednesday that he’s seeking an estimated $21.3 million in emergency assistance from the federal government for Washington families hit by last month’s historic flooding.
In addition to the request for funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the first-term Democrat also sent a letter formally asking President Donald Trump for a federal major disaster declaration after December’s storms caused widespread damage across much of Washington state.
The disaster’s severity, length and scale “overwhelmed local and state response capabilities,” Ferguson said in a Jan. 21 news release.
“Thousands of families experienced devastating loss,” he continued. “Federal assistance is essential to help Washingtonians recover from these historic floods.”
The state’s four legislative caucus leaders and its congressional delegation are set to support Ferguson’s request by sending bipartisan letters later this week, according to the governor’s office.
