Toxic algae advisories continue at two Thurston County lakes
Swimming is prohibited in two Thurston County lakes, but the latest round of tests indicates those restrictions could be lifted soon.
County officials posted toxic blue-green algae bloom advisories on Long Lake and Pattison Lake on April 7. Preliminary results from algae samples taken on April 12 show the toxin levels were below the health advisory limit. But two weekly samples below the health limit are needed for an advisory to be lifted, according to a news release issued by the county.
“Because it is unknown when an algae bloom becomes toxic, please avoid contact with lake water that has visible algae or algae scum on the surface,” the release stated. “Keep pets and children out of the water. When fishing, it is safest to catch-and-release any fish caught during a toxic algae bloom.”
County officials also tested algae samples from Lake St. Clair, Hicks Lake and Scott Lake, and those results came back below the health advisory limit. Ward Lake samples did not contain toxin, according to the release.
“We are asking residents to call if you see algae scum on the shoreline,” the release stated. “If you can collect a sample, please use a clean glass jar. Label and refrigerate the sample and contact our office for pickup or delivery directions.”
