Update: Here are the races in Thurston County still separated by fewer than 1,000 votes
Tuesday’s general election for local government and school board seats had more than its share of tight races.
The Thurston County Auditors’ Office counted more ballots on Saturday, bringing the total ballots tallied at more than 72,000 and leaving about 4,000 ballots still to be tallied on Monday. So far, voter turnout is calculated at 36.8%.
Here are the high-profile races that are still separated by fewer than 1,000 votes:
Thurston County Commissioner District 4: Tenino Mayor Wayne Fournier now leads Vivian Eason by a margin of 412 votes — 34,538 votes to 34,126 — giving him 50.1% of the votes and her 49.5%, with 242 write-in ballots. Eason, an independent, led Fournier, a Democrat, in the early returns.
Port of Olympia Commissioner District 4: Maggie Sanders now leads Rose Chiu Gundersen by a margin of 692 votes — 33,591 votes to 32,899 — giving Sanders 50.3% of the votes and Gundersen 49.2%, with 337 write-in votes.
Tumwater City Council Position 7: Kelly Von Holtz now leads Andrea McGhee by 265 votes — 2,982 votes to 2,717 — giving Von Holtz 52.1% of the votes and McGhee 47.7%, with 25 write-in ballots.
North Thurston Public Schools District 5: Michelle Gipson now leads incumbent David Newkirk by a margin of 535 votes — 11,288 votes to 10,753 — giving Gipson 51% of the votes and Newkirk 48.6%, with 91 write-in ballots.
Thurston County will post updated results daily until all ballots are counted. The county will certify results on Nov. 28.
