Elections

The Thurston Auditor received nearly 50% of ballots by Halloween. What will turnout be by Tuesday?

Thurston County Auditor Mary Hall said Friday that voter turnout was at 49.15%, or just over 100,000 ballots received, as of Halloween.

Hall said the numbers are pretty similar to past presidential elections, and better than the mid-term elections. She expects the county to have somewhere between 75% and 80% voter turnout by Election Day.

“It might be inching up to 80% I hope, but it’s been fairly steady with our returns,” Hall said.

Hall said the Auditor’s Office hasn’t heard from any people having trouble voting so far, other than needing to change their addresses.

Hall said the closer the election gets, the more important it is for voters to use a ballot drop box. She said staff will be doing extra pickups this weekend, so ballots won’t sit in boxes very long.

She said she feels very comfortable about the county’s systems and boxes, as well as their safety and security, in the wake of arson attacks on other ballot drop boxes in the Northwest.
