Neighborhood where Portland shooting suspect killed often confused with Lacey, WA

The Washington state neighborhood where a suspect in the shooting of a right-wing protester in Portland was killed by law enforcement Thursday night is an unincorporated area of Thurston County.

Tanglewilde is surrounded by the city of Lacey and not far from the state capital of Olympia.

The neighborhood had an estimated population of 5,892 people in July 2019, according to the most recent U.S. Census data.

It is known locally as a business and residential area that is often confused with being part of Lacey, The Olympian reported in 2018. The city and neighborhood are so closely aligned that some businesses in Tanglewilde mistakenly paid Lacey city taxes before an audit uncovered the discrepancy, according to The Olympian.

In fact, the area was established before Lacey became a city in 1966.

The neighborhood has one of the only public swimming pools in the area.
