Salmon on pizza? People question origins of ‘Spokane-style pizza’ recipe on TikTok
While the longstanding debate on whether pineapple belongs on pizza continues, a new pizza argument has spawned on social media after a pizza recipe appeared on TikTok.
Does “Spokane-style pizza” exist and does salmon belong on pizza?
Josh Scherer thinks it does.
Scherer is a chef for Mythical Kitchen — a YouTube channel where he creates unusual dishes like Doritos-flavored Mountain Dew and mac-and-cheese chicken wings.
His Spokane-style pizza is no different. He calls it “the most underrated regional pizza” in his April 6 TikTok.
The pizza is cooked in a Pyrex glass dish “because Spokane actually invented the casserole,” Scherer says in the video.
Then he drizzles fry sauce over the raw dough calling it a “local delicacy.” He tops it with canned salmon, bell peppers, onions, mozzarella and strawberries.
The result is a Detroit-style pizza but with more fry sauce.
“You get that good quality eastern Washington salmon and you got that beautiful creamy fry sauce in that and that little hit of sweetness and acid from the strawberry,” he says in the video.
“I see why the entire city of Spokane and the greater Coeur d’Alene region really loves this pizza.”
But people in Spokane, Washington, thought differently.
“This is NOT a Spokane style pizza. I’ve lived here for over 40 years, and this is not a thing. This has to be the worst tasting pizza ever concocted and should not have Spokane’s good name tarnished by it,” one person tweeted.
“Yeah uh ... as a boy who’s lived in the actual city for at least 5 years, I can confirm this is NOT authentic to Spokane at all,” another person wrote on Twitter.
Others appeared to be repulsed by the ingredients.
“Canned salmon, fry sauce, and strawberries? Like how could that dude even stand to chew through a bite of that without vomiting everywhere?” another user tweeted.
And some thought the pizza had potential.
“It kinda had potential until the strawberries,” someone wrote on TikTok.
After all, Scherer did caption his TikTok: “Now here’s a pizza style you probably never ever heard about.”
