New Mount St. Helens poster available for Volcano Awareness Month. Here’s how to get one

A new poster that provides information on Mount St. Helens is available to the public and is inspired by Volcano Awareness Month in Washington state.

Titled “Mount St. Helens: A Mountain Reborn,” the poster map provides a bird’s-eye view of Mount St. Helens and supplies information about how the volcano has changed since its eruption.

Mount St. Helens erupted on May 18, 1980, permanently affecting the landscape and ecosystem in the area. The poster highlights five particular parts of the area, like Spirit Lake and lava domes, and demonstrates the resilience and transformation of those areas. Readers can learn that aquatic life in Spirit Lake is thriving with the reemergence of phytoplankton or that elk and other animals are returning to Pumice Plain.

A physical copy of the 36-by-24 inch map can be picked up for free at the Washington Geology Library, which is in Room 173 of the Natural Resources Building, 1111 Washington St. SE, Olympia. It also can be viewed at https://washingtonstategeology.wordpress.com. The online version gives viewers the option to view the map itself or solely the image of Mount St. Helens.

The map will also be available at the Mount St. Helens visitor center this summer.
