Both U.S. 12 and State Route 123 in Lewis County reopened about 7 p.m. Sunday following a more than two-day closure due to the Goat Rocks Wilderness fire.

The Washington state Department of Transportation warns that the fire remains active and travelers through the area should expect smoky conditions, be alert for emergency personnel, and be prepared for the possibility that it will again be shut down.

About 20 miles of U.S. 12 has been closed up to the White Pass summit since 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, because of the spreading wildfire, smoke, and windy conditions.

Forest Service Roads FSR46, FSR4610, FSR4612, FSR1266, FSR1260 and all associated spurs remain closed, as does La Wis Wis Campground.

In the Packwood area, people from the Timberline community to the north of U.S. 12, Goat Rocks, High Valley and Packwood proper have been reduced to the lowest level of evacuation preparedness. However, the Timberline community to the south of U.S. 12 remains at evacuation Level 2. A news release from Lewis County urged people not to return yet if at all possible.

“Unless necessary DO NOT come to the area. The fire is still active, and associated smoke may affect driving visibility,” the county’s announcement said.

Lewis County issued a statement that sprinklers and hose lines in place throughout the area should not be removed. Fire personnel will remove these items when appropriate, according to the county.
