Approximately 1.1 million Washingtonians are eligible to file their taxes for free this year using the Direct File Pilot Program provided by the Internal Revenue Service.

Washington is one of 12 states participating in the pilot program. English and Spanish language versions of the service are available.

In a news release issued by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the IRS, the agencies noted that the free program is secure and easy to use, and includes no hidden fees. Access is available by smartphone, tablet, and computer.

Live customer support is also available, they noted.

Some examples of people who are eligible provided by the agencies include:

  • A parent with W-2 income that claims the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit.

  • A recent graduate with W-2 income who pays student loan interest.

  • A retired senior citizen with Social Security income.

The agencies estimate that over 19 million taxpayers in the 12 states are potentially eligible.
