Working for Washington state comes with some guaranteed benefits. While the details may vary based on the department and position, the bottom line is competitive.

State jobs come with retirement and deferred compensation programs, plus social security and Medicare systems. Certain positions are eligible for student loan forgiveness as well.

All employees and their families receive basic life insurance, plus dental and medical insurance including vision. Staff can adapt their plan, enroll in a flexible medical spending account and take advantage of dependent care assistance opportunities.

There are guaranteed holidays, vacation time and sick leave for all, plus any additional time off outlined in unionized positions.

With such protections, many can see the benefit in opting for a state position. But what is the outlook of Washington state employment opportunities? What jobs are available?

Here’s what we know.

State jobs in Washington

While some jobs require an in-person role, there are always many remote or flexible hybrid job opportunities through the state.

Right now, job listings show six remote only jobs, four remote optional jobs and 146 flexible/hybrid jobs open for the general public to apply. Flexible/hybrid does not necessarily mean there are no in-person requirements, though, so double check the requirements and description of any job you apply for.

The majority (127) are labeled as permanent full time positions. There are 18 exempt listings, eight limited duration project positions, two non-permanent full time jobs (Insurance Technician 3 and Community Collaborative Consultant) and one listing labeled as “various job types’ (Adult Protective Services Investigator).

Of those 156 listings, only a handful have an estimated annual salary under $60,000. By estimation, 87 offer a salary over $100,000; only 10 offer more than $150,000:

Some departments have more listings than others. Many departments have between one and 10 job openings, while others have a handful of open positions. The departments with the most listings are:
