1 dead, 2 injured when plane crashed in Olympic National Park Tuesday

One person died and two were injured Tuesday when a small plane crashed in the southwest corner of Olympic National Park.

The crash occurred at about 6:50 p.m. in the Quinault area of Olympic National Park, according to a National Park Service news release. The crash site is described as a remote, forested and steep slope north of the Irely Lake Trailhead.

Park rangers responded to the crash site in coordination with Naval Air Station Whidbey Island Search and Rescue. The three occupants of the plane were transported to a Level 1 Trauma Center, according to the news release.

Two occupants are being treated for their injuries and one died. No details about the plane’s origin or the occupants’ identities were provided.

The cause of the accident is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board.

Park officials identified the plane as a Murphy SR3500 Moose.
