3 Washington salmonella cases linked to travel. What to know

A salmonella outbreak linked to eggs has sickened people from 14 states, including Washington, federal health officials said.

Nearly 100 cases have been reported across the country, and eggs from a California company have been recalled, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Aug. 28.

However, the recalled eggs weren’t distributed to Washington, according to an official with the state Department of Health.

The three Washington cases were travel-related, Mark Johnson, a public information officer for the state health department, told The Olympian in an Aug. 29 email.

What eggs have been recalled?

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration said its helping investigate salmonella infections “linked to large brown cage free ‘sunshine/omega-3 golden’ yolk eggs sourced from Country Eggs, LLC,” which is based in Lucerne Valley, California.

The company has announced an egg recall.

Who has gotten sick in the recent outbreak?

Johnson, from the Washington State Department of Health, said the three people in Washington who became sick “all traveled to either Nevada or California, where the recalled eggs were distributed and were exposed during travel.”

They’re from King, Snohomish and Spokane counties and became sick in March or June, Johnson said.

The state health department is taking part in the outbreak investigation.

In all, 95 cases have been reported nationwide, with 18 hospitalizations, the CDC said. No one has died.

The actual number of cases is likely higher than what’s been reported, as “many people recover without medical care and are not tested for salmonella,” according to the CDC.

What is salmonella? What are symptoms?

The bacteria salmonella is a top cause of foodborne illness, according to the CDC.

Common symptoms include diarrhea, stomach cramps and fever, the CDC said.

People can become infected by eating or drinking tainted food and water or touching animals or their poop.
