A nearly monthlong closure of northbound Interstate 5 south of Bellingham that resulted from a March 19 landslide ended Wednesday.

The 250-foot-long landslide left about 7,000 cubic yards of material on the road.

WSDOT crews worked seven days a week to clear the road since the initial landslide. They removed unstable material from the top of the slope, including some boulders the size of buses, before stabilizing the slope and removing the debris.

On Friday, April 10 WSDOT announced the road would likely reopen at 5 a.m. Thursday, April 16. Crews finished ahead of that schedule, and the interstate is currently open to all traffic.

A March 19 landslide dumped around 7,000 cubic yards of material on northbound Interstate 5 near Bellinham, Washington. Less than a month later, both lanes reopened.
