College Place students walk out to protest ICE, war in Iran
About 80 students walked out of College Place High School on Thursday, April 17, to protest the actions of the U.S. government, including the nationwide Immigration and Customs Enforcement crackdown and the war in Iran.
Organized by students with approval of the school administration and faculty, students gathered outside on school grounds about noon. Many gave speeches, including senior organizer Kyler Smith.
"We are concerned that what ICE is doing is immoral: Masked men roaming the streets with deadly weapons inciting fear and dragging people in the streets whether they are citizens or not, without giving them the due process they are guaranteed by the Constitution," Smith said in his speech.
While the walkout was not open to the public and the U-B was not allowed on the property, Smith provided information after the walkout.
He said the reason for the walkout is that many students are concerned that what the government is doing is unconstitutional.
"We are protesting the war in Iran. A war that is causing so many civilian deaths seemingly for no reason," Smith said. "We are protesting that the president is willing to compare himself to a religious deity because he thinks that is the level of power that he possesses. We are protesting that our government is spreading messages of division and hate. Their goal seems to be the pursuit of power and wealth at the expense of unity and peace."
Smith told his classmates that they live in a divided community, even at school. He encouraged his peers to think of one another as members of their community, prioritizing equality and respect for every person no matter their differences.
"Diversity is our greatest strength; we are a nation and a people who need to stand together. In community, we find strength," Smith said. "Be angry. Be scared. But retain moral high ground. Act in a way you will be proud of later in your life."
Smith said the walkout went smoothly, with several other students delivering speeches.
"I think it was a great experience for all involved and a resounding success," Smith said.
