Tuesday's Prep Roundup: Mount Vernon boys' soccer team tops Nooksack Valley

EVERSON - The Mount Vernon High School boys' soccer team cruised past Nooksack Valley 6-2 on Tuesday in a Northwest Conference match.

The Bulldogs fell behind 1–0 in the opening minutes.

"Being down on a small grass field against a disciplined, low block presented a real challenge," Mount Vernon coach Behr Ibarra said. "The group had to manage frustration, stay composed, and solve problems in real time. I'm proud of how the boys handled that moment."

The Bulldogs bit back to lead 3-1 at the half after goals by Elijah Natekin off an Angel Reyes assist, Alfredo Pantoja and Julian Martinez off a Natekin assist.

Mount Vernon had another three goals in the second half - Carlos Ramirez off a Von Franulovich assist, Rio Ibarra Troha off an assist from Santiago Camarena and Uriel García off an assist from Reyes.

"We returned to the basics - building our attacks patiently, one pass at a time - and adjusted to the playing surface," Ibarra said. "The composure paid off as we found our rhythm and worked our way into a comfortable lead."

Elijah Natekin earned Man of the Match honors for Mount Vernon.

Ibarra said he stepped up when the group needed leadership and composure. The coach also highlighted the play of Santiago Camarena in the midfield, and Zekaya Morrison.

The Bulldogs are 9-1-1 in conference and 9-1-1 overall. They are No. 3 in Class 3A state RPI and are unbeaten in their past seven matches.

Anacortes Seahawks 3,

BLAINE - The Seahawks beat the Borderites in a Northwest Conference match.

Anacortes' Fransisco Mantilla, Max Helmreich and Andrew Rodman had goals, and Larkin Salzer and Owen Foley had assists.

The Seahawks snapped a three-match losing streak in which they failed to score a goal.

Anacortes is 3-8 in conference play and 4-9 overall.

Baseball

Mount Vernon Bulldogs 16,

Mount Baker Mountaineers 0

MOUNT VERNON - Three Mount Vernon pitchers combined to throw a perfect game in the five-inning Northwest Conference contest.

Gunnar Rindal walked none and struck out six in three innings of work, while Lukas Romero and Brett Hanseth each pitched one inning.

Mount Vernon's Bode Webb and Brady Peterson each had two RBI, and Reece Roberts and Brady Collins had multiple hits.

Mount Vernon is 10-0 in conference and 14-1 overall. The Bulldogs, No. 3 in Class 3A state RPI, have won 13 consecutive games.

Burlington-Edison Tigers 8,

LYNDEN - Burlington-Edison pitcher Zak Fleshman hurled a two-hit shutout as the Tigers blanked the Lyncs in the Northwest Conference game.

Fleshman also helped his cause at the plate where he went 2-for-5 with two RBI.

The Tigers' Cash Cullop was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Hudson Baker 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

The Tigers scored their eight runs on nine hits.

Burlington-Edison is 8-4 in conference and 12-4 overall.

MOUNT VERNON - The Hurricanes shut out the Wolverines in the five-inning Northwest 2B/1B League game.

Mount Vernon Christian's Walker Wohlgemuth was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, and Chase Woodmansee 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.

Grady Woodmansee collected the pitching win as he three all five innings, striking out seven while not allowing a walk.

The Hurricanes are 7-0 in league and 11-2 overall.

EVERSON - The Cubs beat the Pioneers in a five-inning Northwest Conference game.

Sedro-Woolley started off strong with four runs in the first inning and three in the second.

The Cubs' Lane Guffie was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI, while Colby Silvis was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, and Cail Wilson 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.

Trey Gardner pitched all five innings for the Cubs, allowing six hits and no walks while striking out six.

Sedro-Woolley is 6-5 in conference and 11-5 overall.

ANACORTES - The Seahawks blanked the Trojans in the Northwest Conference game.

Lewellen pitched for the Cubs, allowing one hit, one walk and striking out eight in the five innings.

FERNDALE - The Tigers defeated the Golden Eagles in the Northwest Conference game.

Burlington-Edison's Katelyn Billings was 3-for-4 with a home run, double and two RBI; Vivian Rathjen 3-for-4 with a home run, double and two RBI; Abby Herregesell 1-for-4 with three RBI; Stella Kowalski 2-for-4; and Zoe Zimmerman 2-for-3 with a double.

Billings pitched all seven innings, allowing six hits, four walks and striking out 12.

SEDRO-WOOLLEY - The Cubs got the best of the Wildcats in the Northwest Conference match.

"Another win for the team," Sedro-Woolley coach Janine Van Liew said. "This win included six tiebreakers to get through."

In singles, Sedro-Woolley's Ruby Hudson won 7-5, 6-3, Jasmyn Burkhalter 7-6(5), 6-4 and Kylie Horkley 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles, the Cubs' Chloe Larsen and Akira Spagnolo won 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, and Alexis Sanchez and Junie Thompson 3-6, 7-6, 6-3.

MOUNT VERNON - The Bulldogs won twice in singles in the Northwest Conference match.

Farah Briseno won 6-1, 6-2, and Aria Guerrero 6-2, 7-5.

BURLINGTON - The Tigers fell to the Cougars in a Northwest Conference match.

Girls' Golf

Northwest Conference

BELLINGHAM - Burlington-Edison won its fifth conference tournament, beating eight other squads in the 18-hole tournament at North Bellingham Golf Course.

Burlington-Edison tallied a five-golfer total 454, well ahead of runner-up Sehome, which finished at 568.

All six Tigers golfers finished in the top eight. Morgan Perry was second with an 87.

Burlington-Edison's Anna Horton was fourth at 89, Paige Dodds fifth at 90, Caity Horton sixth at 92, and Hanna Biringer and Kylee VanderArk tied for eighth with rounds of 96.

Perry, Dodds, Biringer and VanderArk had personal-best scores for the Tigers.

Track and Field

Lynden Christian Invitational

LYNDEN - Mount Vernon Christian competed in the eight-team meet.

The Hurricanes' Seth Russell won the 200-meters run in 23.38 seconds and the long jump with a mark of 21 feet, 1 inch; Jaxon Silver the 400 (54.48); Landon Blanken the discus (133-7 1/2); and Noah Vander Kooy the triple jump (38-11).

For the Mount Vernon Christian girls, Avery McCullough won the 100 (13.30) and Emily Van Hofwegen the 300 hurdles (49.42)
