Sidewalk repairs to get underway Monday in Sedro-Woolley

SEDRO-WOOLLEY - Sidewalk repair season is about to get underway in Sedro-Woolley.

Beginning at 7 a.m. Monday and continuing through 5 p.m. Friday, May 15, Bennett Street from 3rd Street to Township Street and Jameson Street from 3rd Street to Township Street will have crews from Precision Concrete Cutting Inc. hard at work.

"They will be doing sidewalk milling to remove tripping hazards," Public Works Director Bill Bullock said. "They are going to do a couple dozen areas within town. They were the sole source because they are the only company who does this particular method."

The projects cost is not to exceed $26,513.

The company from Provo, Utah, performed similar work in the city in 2024 and 2025.

It utilizes patented tools and techniques to efficiently remove sidewalk trip hazards using a specialized saw.

The method minimizes extensive grinding otherwise required on severely uneven sections of sidewalk.

"Basically, they have this proprietary capability which is basically a horizontal concrete saw," Bullock said. "So when you have sidewalk panels that have tipped two inches or more in steepness, they need to be sawed."

If the panels are less than two inches, the city can use a standard grinding machine to smooth the surface.

"But when there is more than two inches to go through, it takes a really long time," he said of having to use a grinder. "So with a horizontal saw, they do a saw cut to take away all that thickness rather than just having to continuously grind."

After the company cuts the concrete, the city will use a grinder to clean up and polish the sidewalk.

"It makes it very efficient and will let us take care of quite a few trip hazards that have come up in the last year or two," Bullock said. "It just kind of depends on the season and the frost, thaw that takes place. Sometimes you get a lot of those and others you don't get many."
