Incarcerated Green Hill teen accused of punching staff member
May 6-An incarcerated teen at the Green Hill School juvenile detention facility faces felony charges after he allegedly assaulted a corrections staff member.
Atreyu R. Batts, 18, is charged with one count each of intimidating a public servant and custodial assault.
Intimidating a public servant is considered a Class B felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Custodial assault, a Class C felony, is punishable by up to five years in prison.
Batts made a virtual appearance in Lewis County Superior Court from Green Hill School on Tuesday.
During the hearing, the prosecution and defense agreed to recommend releasing Batts on his own recognizance, thereby allowing him to remain at Green Hill School pending trial.
Defense attorney Rachael Tiller said Batts had advised her that his maximum anticipated release date is in 2029.
"Mr. Meagher informs me that a minimum date is 2028," Tiller added.
Senior Deputy Prosecutor Bradley Meagher confirmed that Batts was expected to remain at the Chehalis juvenile facility until at least 2028.
Judge J. Andrew Toynbee agreed to release Batts back to Green Hill and set an arraignment for May 14.
According to the probable cause affidavit filed by the Lewis County Prosecutor's Office, the alleged incident occurred on March 3 after Batts refused to return to his room as requested.
A corrections staff member reportedly told Batts he would be escorted if he did not comply.
According to the affidavit, Batts responded by allegedly hiking up his pants and getting into a "fighting posture." He then allegedly yelled at the staff member.
"The staff member grabbed the defendant who began punching the staff member repeatedly in the back of the head," the affidavit says.
Batts has multiple juvenile convictions, according to the affidavit.
