AI-powered road safety platform details traffic safety issues in Concrete

CONCRETE - Skagit County Sheriff's Office deputy Josh Murdock spoke to the Concrete Town Council on Monday about data and future uses of the AI-powered road safety platform StreetVision.

StreetVision, developed by Cambridge Mobile Telematics, collects and analyzes consented driver data, smartphone records and contextual safety information to map high-risk spots and risky behaviors.

Murdock said the most high-risk location in Concrete is Highway 20, which had the following patterns:

* Speeding while entering town, where the speed limit drops

* Accelerating through the school zone

* Lots of phone usage, indicating distracted driving

Skagit County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Craig Caulk said this kind of data enables targeted patrols of the area, which have proven successful.

For example, two weeks ago, 58 citations were issued in a single hour along Highway 20 due to targeted patrolling.

"We want to have a fine balance of not being the heavy-handed law enforcement that some people like you think that we are, but actually provide the product of safety and opportunity to all of you in this community," Caulk said. "We want to work hand in hand with you."

Work is also being done to prioritize public awareness to improve driver safety.

Washington Safety Commission Region 11 Target Zero Manager Carr Lanham stressed the need to reduce traffic deaths and to educate students at Concrete High School and Concrete Middle School about DUIs, speeding, and seat belt use.

He said this education is especially important in areas such as Concrete because the region's rural areas have a lot of traffic-related deaths involving young male drivers.

Murdock said, "(We want) to change that behavior very young."

Looking ahead, Murdock said the county Sheriff's Office plans to host more community engagement events such as Monday's presentation.

"We want to get this information out there because the more you're aware, the more we benefit from having those kinds of dialogues," Murdock said.

Concrete's next Town Council meeting will be at 6 p.m. Monday, May 25. For more information, visit townofconcrete.com.
