La Terraza celebrates community and collaboration

Filled with culture, community and the aroma of food sizzling on the grill, downtown Wenatchee came alive Saturday during La Terraza, an event aimed at supporting local Hispanic and Latino-owned businesses.

Hosted by the Wenatchee Valley Chamber of Commerce, the sixth annual event transformed downtown into a celebration of food, music and culture, featuring vendors, live entertainment, a tequila garden and activities for families.

"We're so excited to see this all come to life finally," said D'Andre Vasquez, community relations and development coordinator for the chamber. "We knew that we were going to face some challenges. We did all the events, and it's been a really busy weekend. But I think in true Wenatchee fashion, we got together. We try to collaborate as much as possible, and we're seeing the results of that community be here."

Vasquez said the event was designed to give small business owners an opportunity to establish a presence in downtown while also creating a welcoming space for the broader community.

"Really the focus here is to give our small business owners an opportunity to set up storefront in downtown," Vasquez said. "It's an opportunity to bring community together, celebrate Hispanic culture, celebrate Wenatchee Valley, celebrate our businesses."

This year's event expanded into multiple areas downtown, including a stage for live performances, a youth area and a tequila garden.

While La Terraza was taking place between First and Second Streets, Tour de Bloom, an annual cycling race, was also set up in downtown and surrounding areas, while the Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center celebrated its groundbreaking ceremony.

Throughout the day, visitors gathered to enjoy mariachi groups, folklórico dancers and local bands while exploring booths from area businesses and vendors, including a special feature in the tequila garden: the Tour de Bloom's Blue Mexican Lager produced by Timberbeast Brewing.

Vasquez said collaboration between organizers and local businesses played a major role in the event's success, especially as several downtown events took place during the same weekend.

"We knew that if any one of us wanted to have success, collaboration was the way to go," he said. "We collaborated with the businesses, a lot of them are offering drink specials. Really, just the theme is collaboration - collaboration and community."

He added that La Terraza continues to grow alongside the region's cultural presence.

"Wenatchee's really becoming a hub for many things, for many cultures," Vasquez said. "Whether it's our small businesses that are doing really well, whether it's our mariachi programs or folklórico programs, it's just becoming a hub for a lot of culture here."

As the event continues to grow, Vasquez said organizers hope La Terraza remains a space where culture, business and community can come together.

"We need to continue to open up space," he said. "We need to continue to share that because that's what Wenatchee does. Our our plan for the years to come, it's to build on that, track greater talent, attract larger talent and really become a hub and lead."
