Tuesday's Prep Roundup: Burlington-Edison's Brownell leads after first round of state golf tourney
TUMWATER - Burlington-Edison High School boys' golfer Wyatt Brownell sat atop the leaderboard Tuesday after the first round of the Class 2A State Championships at Tumwater Valley Golf Club.
Brownell, a senior and two-time defending Class 2A state champion, shot an 18-hole round of 69 to lead the tournament by two strokes.
The cut to make Wednesday's second round was 83.
Burlington-Edison's Logan Arendse shot a 77 to advance to the second round, while teammates Cael Hamilton and Cruz Hanstead failed to make the cut. Hamilton finished with a round of 85 and Hanstead an 86.
Anacortes' Vance Frerichs shot a 75 and is tied for seventh, while teammate Dex Hong shot a 79 and Sledge Martinez an 83.
Class 3A State Championships
SPOKANE - Sedro-Woolley's Riley Friebel is tied for 10th at Indian Canyon Golf Course after his round of 69.
Fellow Cub Colton Turner finished outside the top 12 individuals after he shot a 79 and did not advance to the second round.
Class 2B State Championships
LIBERTY LAKE - All three Mount Vernon Christian golfers made the cut at Liberty Lake Golf Course.
Seth Rowland sits second after his round of 76 while Joshua Toner is fifth after his round of 79 and Owen Carlson is tied for sixth after shooting 80.
Players with rounds of 87 or better advanced to the second day.
Girls' Golf
Class 3A State Championships
DEER PARK - Mount Vernon's Livi Burton made the second round after her round of 90 put her in a tie for 62nd at Deer Park Golf Club.
Missing the cut for the Bulldogs was Lacey Cooley with a 99, Abigail Adams at 102, Molly Thompson at 104 and Chloe Walker at 122.
Sedro-Woolley's Cadence Natoli also failed to advance after shooting 100.
Class 2A State Championships
CHEHALIS - Burlington-Edison had three golfers advance into the second round at Riverside Golf Club.
The cut line was 99.
Morgan Perry is tied for 11th after a round of 87, while Anna Horton is 14th after an 88 and Caity Horton 16th following a 90.
"We played tough today," Burlington-Edison coach Greg Knutzen said. "I'm very proud of the effort and excited that the girls have put themselves in the middle of the battle for a state trophy."
Failing to make the cut for the Tigers were Kylee VanderArk at 103, Hanna Biringer at 104 and Paige Dodds at 115.
Class 2B State Championships
LIBERTY LAKE - Mount Vernon Christian's Alyssa Pringle had a round of 101 to make the cut of 104 at Liberty Lake Golf Course.
Mount Vernon Christian's Cheyenne McNeely and La Conner's Addison Keller did not make the cut.
