Seahawks sports roundup, May 27
Boys Lacrosse
Class 2A State Tournament
The Seahawks beat Selah 17-14 on Saturday, May 23, to win their first state championship.
The team, which plays at the club level in the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association, concluded its fifth season.
"That victory is the product of 16 amazing young men buying into each other, our mission and our values of Team, Toughness, and Discipline," coach Brady Turnage said. "Our boys worked extremely hard all year and overcame more uncertainty and challenge than in any previous season. Watching them play with exceptional poise and energy, and for one another on Saturday was uplifting. We are proud beyond words of our boys."
Against Selah, Emmit Johnston had seven goals, Connor Snyder and Mason Snyder three each, and Brendan Cutter, Matthew Lewis, Caleb Smale and Loden Whiton one each.
Smale had five assists, Connor Snyder three, and Mason Snyder one.
Anacortes outshot Selah 30-18, and Seahawks goalie James Hokanson made four saves.
Johnston was the state tournament MVP.
To get to the state championship match at Starfire Sports in Tukwila, the Seahawks had playoff wins against Archbishop Murphy 22-10 and Overlake 20-13.
Anacortes was 4-3 in the regular season.
Boys Golf
Class 2A State Tournament
The Seahawks placed sixth as a team Wednesday, May 27, at Tumwater Valley Golf Club.
Anacortes' Vance Frerichs finished in a three-way tie for 12th at 151 with rounds of 75 and 76, Dex Hong tied for 17th at 161 (80-81), and Sledge Martinez finished 43rd at 175 (83-92).
All three golfers are sophomores.
Frerichs had a solid tournament despite battling a head cold, said McKnight.
"He bounced back with maturity and focus after any setback and maintained an even keel attitude as the tournament progressed," McKnight said. "He was the fifth-best amongst underclassmen and will look to improve on that next year."
Hong was playing his final tournament with the Seahawks as he is moving out of state before the next golf season.
"I was emotional watching him in the second round, especially since he was playing some of the best golf I have seen out of him in the past month," McKnight said.
McKnight said Martinez did well to just make the cut to get into the second round.
"Sledge was the true embodiment of grit the last two days," McKnight said. "Despite some swing mechanic issues he powered through to make the cut to day two, getting the potential 'monkey off his back.'"

The Seahawks doubles team of Colton Hong and Adam Van Egdom finished as state runner-up on Saturday, May 23.
On Friday, the pair won 6-2, 6-4 and 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
"In the second match, second set, Colton and Adam held off three set points to advance," Anacortes coach Bryan Benson said. "That set probably took five years off my life because of the nervous moments and jaw-dropping winners from both sides ... but those are five years well-spent."
On Saturday, they won their semifinal-round match 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, then lost in the title match 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5.
