Skagit County law enforcement takes part in annual Torch Run
Skagit County law enforcement agencies took part Wednesday in the Law Enforcement Torch Run.
The run takes place each year.
This year, three torches will be brought together Friday in Tacoma for the opening ceremonies of the 2026 Special Olympics Washington State Spring Games. The torches started their journeys in Blaine, Spokane and Vancouver.
The Spring Games will be held in Tacoma and Federal Way.
The torch that started in Blaine on Wednesday morning was passed in the afternoon to Skagit County law enforcement in Alger.
It went through Skagit County from Alger to Conway.
The Skagit County section of the run is dedicated to the memory of Skagit County Sheriff's Office deputy Anne Jackson, who was one of seven killed in Alger in 2008. Jackson was on duty when she was killed.
Prior to her death, Jackson volunteered for the Anacortes Police Department's Special Olympics events.
"We do this and dedicate the run in her memory so she's not forgotten," said Anacortes Police Department Corporal and Skagit County Run Coordinator Janet Wilson.
The Anacortes Police Department has been participating in the Torch Run for about 19 years.
The Skagit County leg of the run raises money and awareness for Special Olympics.
Funds are collected through the runners' entry fees, and the runners get sponsors to support their runs and to donate.
This year's run had about 20 runners from agencies throughout the county, including from the Sheriff's Office, the Skagit County Community Justice Center, the Mount Vernon Police Department, the Burlington Police Department and the Sedro-Woolley Police Department.
As of Wednesday, the Mount Vernon Police Department is leading in money raised.
