Vancouver man pleads not guilty to vehicular homicide in crash with bicyclist
A Vancouver man pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a charge of vehicular homicide stemming from an August 2022 fatal crash in which he struck a bicyclist in a crosswalk in Orchards.
Robert V. Metcalf Jr., 69, appeared in person on a summons in Clark County Superior Court. Judge Suzan Clark granted him supervised release, but he was ordered to first report to the Clark County Jail for administrative booking.
His next hearing is scheduled for July 9.
Vancouver defense attorney Jacy Thayer told the court that Metcalf has no prior criminal history. He's a U.S. Air Force veteran and machinist for Boeing. Thayer added that drugs and alcohol were not involved in the crash.
Washington State Patrol troopers responded at 5:18 a.m. Aug. 5, 2022, to the intersection of state Highway 503 and Northeast 71st Street for a vehicle-versus-bicycle crash.
Metcalf was driving a 2001 Lincoln Navigator south on Highway 503 toward 71st Street as the signal turned red. At the same time, Levi Adolph-Collin, 24, began to cross the highway east on his bicycle in a crosswalk. Court records say the crosswalk signal gave him the right-of-way.
Metcalf sped into the intersection, going 60 mph in a 40 mph area, about a second after the traffic signal turned red, and struck Adolph-Collin, according to court records.
Adolph-Collin was taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver, where he died from his injuries the next day.
Adolph-Collin worked at the Orchards Grocery Outlet and was reportedly on his way to work that morning.
